IT key figures: more than controlling IT costs (IT controlling 1/3)

24 March 2020, Stanislaw Panow

IT key figures and the control of IT costs are also becoming an increasingly important prerequisite for corporate success in medium-sized companies. Small and medium-sized companies recognize the need to optimize their IT services according to plan and to use effective IT controlling.

IT controlling must not just be limited to cost control

Because the cost control is usually limited to the expenses for hardware or software. While these costs can still be allocated directly, it gets more complicated when it comes to operation or maintenance.

Setting a framework for IT controlling with IT key figures

In this way, it can be determined which requirements exist for IT in order to check the achievement of goals with the help of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). So far, however, there have been no financeable methods for recording IT key figures.

TBM in medium-sized companies needs key IT figures

Large companies use comprehensive TBM tools. A huge effort for small and medium-sized companies, which usually do not have the trained specialists available. In addition, the expected performance values are constantly changing. This is due to the rapid technical development, restructuring or the requirements of the departments that are changing. How can you evaluate KPIs in a meaningful way and compare them with reference values? In IT, the interdependencies between IT services are also very large. Individual, isolated values are therefore often not very meaningful.

With itpilot® , a comprehensive, medium-sized company-oriented methodology for the inventory and evaluation of all IT services in the company is available, from which key figures that are then also understandable for the management are generated.

The IT analysis methodology enables IT management to structure IT in a meaningful and simple manner, to document its construction plan comprehensively and to allocate personnel and operating costs.

With itpilot®, IT can finally provide meaningful IT key figures for important management decisions - for the best possible use of resources and to be at the forefront of digital transformation with the right projects. In addition, an industry-wide comparison with the key figures of other companies is possible (IT benchmarking).
